What is a composite tooth filling?

A composite filling is a tooth-coloured blend of plastic and glass particles that bonds directly to your tooth structure. Unlike old silver amalgam fillings, composite requires removing far less healthy tooth material — the resin bonds directly to the tooth, strengthening it rather than just filling the space. It is colour-matched to your exact shade so the restoration is invisible in normal conversation.

When do you need a filling?

Fillings are needed when a cavity has formed — either caught early on an X-ray, or presenting as sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweets. They are also used to repair chipped or cracked teeth, close small gaps, and replace worn-down tooth surfaces. Early treatment of cavities is always preferable — a small filling now prevents the need for a crown or root canal later.

What does the filling procedure feel like?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia so you feel nothing during treatment. Dr. Harshi removes the decayed material, shapes the preparation, applies the bonding agent and composite in layers, and cures each layer with a special light. The filling is then shaped and polished to match your bite perfectly. The entire process typically takes 30–45 minutes per tooth.

How do you make your fillings last longer?

Composite fillings last 7–12 years on average with proper care. Avoiding biting hard objects (ice, pen caps, hard candy), maintaining twice-daily brushing and flossing, and attending your 6-monthly check-up all extend the life of your fillings significantly.
